I've got a 2003 with 450+ hours on the engine. It's a merc, but I've been told that this engine was actually built by Yamaha, the Merc parts are the cowl and lower unit. My buddy has the Yamaha version of the motor, but pop it open and it looks exactly like mine. In any event - my motor runs awesome and I am very happy with it.

But...I would be a bit scared of the fact that the previous owner didn't use a transom saver. the motor lock will hold the motor in place, and it is OK to use in case of emergency, but it does not keep the weight off the transom while trailering the boat. Over time, that's going to put a lot of wear and tear on the transom and could result in some very serious issues (such as - needing a new transom $$$$)
