I detail for a living and I have two very important tools for carpet cleaning both boats and vehicles. First is my hot water extractor and second is my steam cleaner. The extractor probably isn't worth it for a average joe looking to clean once in awhile as it runs north of $1, 000. The steamer can behad for much less and produce great rresults. When combined with mild cleaning solution the results are tremendous. Look for a mcculloch brand steamer with attachments. Roughly $120 and has awide array of uses. Do a youtube search on carpet steam cleaning for indepth info. Becareful what you spray on your carpet as it can deteriorate the carpets fibers.
