I replaced my cables about 5 yrs ago because I could barely turn the steering wheel. I put in the new cables and the boat steered easy for about 3 yrs. After that it started getting worse and worse every yr. I have seen some videos showing to take the cable slides out of the engine, clean them up and grease that area, but the inside of the cable is sealed off. I attempted to clean the part that attached through the engine, but I have to take my engine off to do it. It's a 115 hp Merc, I need an engine lift to get it off. With the problems I have experienced I have decided to put in hydraulic steering and never have to deal with this problem again. The 2 new cables cost about $300 vs. $970 for the hydraulic. I'm kinda sick about spending $970, but I know if I put new cable back in that I will just be replacing them again.
Good Luck
