Subject: Hooking up RPM Tach to Merc

I was hoping someone electrical savvy could help me out here. I just recently repowered my boat with a 2001 Merc 60hp Model# 60ELHPT and the previous seller did not really have any controls coming out of the motor except the OEM Quicksilver Ignition/Alarm box and a power trim wire. There was no RPM tach previously installed, thus no wire harness for it.

I would like to reuse my old RPM tach on my boat and it already has the two control wires running to the motor but I don’t know where to hook them up on the new Merc? I’ve read numerous forums and still stumped but I think I’m getting real close… Just not sure where/how to hook this up.

Here’s the situation/condition:

Looking at back of old RPM tach and from reading info online, I set it to 6P (6 Pulse) for my Merc 4stk motor. The ground (black) wire is still hooked up in series to my other toggles/gauges which still have power. I have a (Gray wire) going to my “Signal” post on the tach and a (Purple wire) going to my “Ignition” post. These two wires ran along with the control wire/harness bundle that I removed off my old Johnson and they hooked up to what looked like a buss bar/control point on the Johnson. I’m trying to figure out where to hook these two wires (Purple and Gray) to my Merc without having to buy a wire harness. I guess I don’t know where exactly the Ignition hookup point is or the Signal point is on the Merc motor?

I'm kind of using this as a reference guide for the wiring and it matches up with my color wire coding: http://1manual.com/Mercury%20manuals/Service%20Manual%20PDFs/FourSt...

From my understanding the Purple wire needs to go to a power source and Gray wire needs to be hooked up to the starter? Not sure exactly where these hookups are? Can you connect the control harness plug on the motor end (which is factory capped off since no control were previous installed)?

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!
