I have both of mine on 2.5" long RAM's. I'd suggest playing with their location, front and back. I like having my HDS8 on my console, and my 7 on the bow. I really like the larger screen for driving and navigating. Then fishing, I have my 7 on the bow solely as a chart, and the console HDS8 is turned around to face the bow and is sonar/LSS or a secondary chart on a different zoom if I need it.

It's also nice to have them on the same type of mount, in the event one goes south, you can move the other one into the position yuo need it most at the time.
