Not a problem with a good welder. I had a small 1 1/2" crack welded on my lower unit just last season. Ken tried to grind the weld flush but it kept seeping water so the only side effect I have is you can see the weld.
PS- Make sure there is no inner damage to the inside of the unit, that ice can really mess things up inside there.
