Subject: Fiberglass Repair

I have a 2008 Ranger 619VS. Up until now I have managed to avoid any damage beyond minor scratches. On a recent trip, however, I somehow suffered some actual fiberglass damage. Somehow--probably from the dock--I got about a 3 inch long by 1.5-2 inch high gash or wear-spot on the left rear corner, a few inches above the water line. It goes down to a shallow fiberglass level (through gel coat and paint). It only affects one paint color.

Not having done this before, I was surprised when a repair service said over the phone it could be a few thousand dollars.

Is this normal? Is fiberglass repair typically very expensive? Looks like I might have to be using my insurance policy for the first time.

Thanks!
