I cut the ends off in my 1860, and I've had water over the bow a few times and nothing got wet in any of my compartments. I only cut as many as I needed - not all of them. My longest rods are 8-6 and they fit with room to spare. I bet I could get a 9' in a couple, but not all, of them.
