As above, buy in the fall/early winter and have a careful inspection done by a reputable dealership (they'll charge you but not much) on the whole boat before you make a deal.

I traded a Ford Explorer for a Astro bass boat one interesting night only to later find that the transom was rotted so bad the boat wasn't safe. I dumped the boat off on some kid and his dad who wanted to work on a project all winter. I told them everything about the problem and sold them a motor and a trailer. The POS boat was free.
