Leaving your unit in the boat out in the elements will certainly not help the longevity of your unit at all. When moisture comes, freezes, melts and so on, this is not what you want happening to it. I wouldn't expect any electronic piece of equipment to hold up well in that.

I've got a little time under my belt using the new Gen 2 units and I will say, they are much quicker units than anything I've seen yet from Lowrance or Humminbird. If you can swing the HDS-5, go that route. It offers the ability to add other features as you want.

If you really don't want to spend the extra $$$, I would not hesitate to go with the Elite-5 DSI. The DownScan has literally replaced the need for regular sonar imo. This is a great unit for the $$$ and very easy to use.
