My trailer was hydraulic, so when you were backing up if the weight of the trailer pushed forward, the brakes were applied. So, if you were on flat surface, you could back up carefully without them engaging, but most of the time they did. This was a shorelander and I had a metal key that fit in the tongue that locked out the brakes.
