The Magnum will handle the challenge well until you take it on big water. Anything over REAL 2.5' waves get uncomfortable if running a tiller.

Handles big water really well, draws less than a foot at launch, and runs mid 30's with a 50 hp 4 stroke. Absolutely perfect for what you described if you are looking for a smaller 17' boat.
