If replacing the bunks it is a good idea to switch to carriage bolts instead of lags. It takes more work and time but carriage bolts with lock nuts will never fall out like lag bolts are prone to do. Just sink the carriage bolts deep enough in the wood so they do not stick up. Takes more work since you have to put the carriage bolts in the wood before you carpet the bunks but well worth it.
