I've been towing a 2000lb+ boat/trailer rig behind V-6 motor/auto-tranny equipped Chrysler vehicles (2 different ones) for 10 years with no broken engines or transmissions. If you are a careful driver and stay on-top of vehicle maintenence, you could do it too.

But, it sounds like you've already convinced yourself otherwise, so go with your gut. Things usually end up best that way.
