Sounds like just a carb adjustment to me... I am betting it is just the slow speed fuel/air mixture screw on the carb. Should be pretty easy to access.
From where you are now with the screw on the carb, turn the screw counter-clockwise about 1/4 turn and try and start the motor. The goal being at this point is to get the motor running. If it stays running, let it warm up, then continue to adjust the screw on the carb.
When adjusting, turn the screw back in a touch, then wait a bit and listen if the motor starts to stutter more or get smoother. If it starts to stutter more, turn the screw back to where you had it, then go a little the other way. It should get smoother. Continue this process until you get a stutter the other way. Once you get that, turn the screw back in until it is smooth again. Now...shut the motor down, set the throttle to starting position and start the motor. idle back and see if it stays running smoothly. If it does, you are ready for the fine tuning at the lake.
At it's smoothest point, take it to the lake (unless you are already there and doing this, which is what I would recommend so the prop is under load while adjusting) and get it warmed up. Gun the throttle to see if it picks up quickly or bogs down a little. If it bogs down a touch, turn the idle screw out 1/4 turn and try again. If it bogs down more, then turn the screw back to beginning position, then turn 1/4 turn in and gun the throttle again. If it doesn't bog down and picks up really quick, then you are all set.
Now comes the big part. Shut the motor down, and restart it. If all is set well, it should start right up and run well without issue.
