Dirt,

Try checking the fuel pickup line that hangs from the bottom of your gas tank's lid into the fuel. If it's older, it may have deteriated to a point where it is no longer picking up fuel and thus the fuel is no longer getting from the tank to the motor. This happened to me. I have a nice running 2001 25hp Merc outboard. I was traveling across the lake and all of a sudden it just quick and would not start. I would pump the bulb and it would not build up pressure. I popped open the 6 gallon gas tank and the fuel pick up line had deterioated to a point (b/c it was 10 years old and possibly due to ethanol use by prior owner) that it had nearly completely disentegrated into little rubber bits. It obviously was not picking up fuel. When I pumped the bulb, it was just pumping air. I ended up just buying a new tank and fuel pick up line as well as a new fuel line from the tank to the outboard just to be safe. Pumped fuel and ran fine after that.
