My 2001 Yamaha 4 stroke manual says to run 10W-30 or 10W-40.

It doesn't say anything about the special "marine" 4 stroke oil which is much more expensive.

That being said, I had always just used 10W-30 synthetic oil like Quaker State or whatever was cheapest.

I kept hearing about the special "marine" specs for 4 stroke oil so I did spluge this year and bought the marine sythenic brand from Fleet Farm for like 4 bucks a quart.

My understanding is whatever the marine oil specs have compared to regular oil is something that prevents rust. And I read that rust is more of an issue with motors used in saltwater than fresh water.
