You should not have to replace the axle unless you really buggered the threads "prying" the nut off or bent the spindle in the process. The others guys are right these bearings are pretty hard steel and most of the time can be split with a grinder and a chisel. I usually do more damage on the spindle with a torch than a grinder when removing bearings. However dont worry too much about little dents or scratches on the spindle as long as you can get the rear seal and races on correctly. The bearings ride on the races not the spindle.
How about the race and the bearing inside the rim? Have you been able to get those out? Is the inside race the only thing left on the spindle?

Change them all NOW While you are at it!
