Sounds like it could be a carb adjustment of the fuel/air mixture and is running too rich... When you hit the gas, it floods out and bogs down more. When you feather it, you gradually build up and can get it go go... How smooth does it idle? Does the motor shake a bit? Are the RPM's correct?

If anything, what I would consider changing out the spark plugs and trying the motor... usually when a plug goes bad, it is pretty quick, and if nothing else, it is cheap and preventative..
