I wouldnt even think about trailering my boat without a transom saver on. If you have a smaller motor like say under 75 I could see it possibly not being a problem, but no way on the larger motors.

I trailered mine a couple times without it, using the built in brackets and it bent the hell out of them. That is when I read the manual and it said under no circumstances trailer using those brackets, you must use a transom saver.
