Consider using two transducers with a Y-cable split. You can put the expensive SI transducer on the transom up above the bottom edge so it's protected from hitting anything but below the idle-speed water line so it gets readings. Install a shoot-through high-speed transducer inside the boat for standard sonar readings while running at speed. This is standard practice on most bass-style boats.
