What kind of speed are you getting now? We've got a couple similar boats, an 85 lunker V16 with a 40 honda and an 88 lunker V16 with a 20 merc. Both boats are tillers. The 40 runs 31-32 with me and trim adjustment and the 20 runs 24 mph with me and no trim adjustment. I'd guess the only thing you could do is change props, but you'll lose holeshot especially with a load. The 20 slows to 18 mph with 3 guys and the 40 still runs 28 with four in the boat.
All said I wouldn't change a thing with a newer boat, especially not pound a dent into it! If you want to go faster get a bigger motor or faster boat.
