I have a 1998 merc 175 efi pushing a 98 ranger 690vs, and I feel that this is a very good motor on gas. I fished the petewell musky challenge running and gunning all day from dam to the big water and only used six gallons of gas!!! You should get that motor checked out by a service tech!
