Hi, Urban legends are rampant about lead-acid batteries. VMS is correct about using different sizes in series (24V or 36V applications). Because it has less power/stored energy available, the smaller battery will limit the amount of run time. However, neither will be damaged.

Connecting different sizes in parallel (12V applications) is not a problem either! They will work fine.
