Location: Stevens Point, WI		If it were me buying and I may want a gps in the near future, I'd definitely spend the extra and get the HDS-5, the sonar/gps combo. You can't add a gps to the HDS-5x, it's only a sonar.

So to answer your question, you cannot convert anything at a later date, you'd have to buy the HDS-5m if you wanted the gps then.

I'm not familiar with the Lakemaster chips, so I can't help you there.
