The reason for mounting it near your regular transducer is so that the down imaging and 2d sonar match up correctly. If you've got them within a couple feet I wouldn't worry about it.

As far as not getting a read on plane with it's not going to work worth a crap. I like it up on my step anyway so it doesn't create drag or spray a rooster tail.

Here is a pic of my H bird transducer I know it's not the same, but it gives you an idea of what works.
