I just purchased the scan unit also. I noticed in the mounting instructions they said that the closer to the HDS transducer the better. I am not sure why.

I also noticed that they refer to the yellow wire going to a switch. I emailed Lowrance about this and have yet to receive a reply. I don't understand what the switch is for?
