Dave, everything has to do with the unit, not the transducer.

If you take a look at these two links, the Display type is different.

X-135:

HDS-5:

The X-135 has a Monochrome Film SuperTwist, 16-level grayscale where as the HDS-5 display has a 16-bit color SolarMAX PLUS TFT. That's one of two main differences. The other difference is the sonar output power. The X-135 has a max of 4000 watts, the HDS-5 has a max 250W peak-to-peak (31W RMS) actual; 30,000W peak-to-peak analog equivalent W.

These two things are your main differences. The more output, the more detail a transducer will pick up and relay back to your unit.
