Mariner was originally introduced in Europe, then followed in the US in the late 70's. Mercury brought Mariner in the US as another option, basically like a Cadillac under the GM umbrella. As you might see, the Optimax was both run as a Mariner and Mercury during it's official release. As far as I know, the Mariners are the same as a Mercury, just presented as a different name.

Every Mariner I've ever dealt with or run has been great, wouldn't hesitate to own one.
