Location: Wausau | Oddly enough or sadly, I had two SeaStar Units leak within five years. I contacted SeaStar and they asked I send in a few pictures. Upon request, it was noted that the wrong spacer was installed at the factory. They sent me a new unit at no cost. Then two years later (currently) I had the same issue with leaking seals. Again, I contacted SeaStar knowing I had to fix the problem, but didn't want the same concern in two more years. I followed the same procedure and sent in a few pictures. At first they (SeaStar technician) thought stray current could cause pitting on the shaft. However, after more time they identified the current unit was made while a machine at the factory was not properly cleaning all the metal particles from the shafts. These particles scratched the shaft, which I was told caused the seals to fail. Even better, I was sent another brand new one, which is waiting to be installed. Upon talking to the Yamaha technician working on my boat, he shared other technicians were noticing that other leaking units had red power steering fluid. It's unsure if there is a connection, but he suggested to use the light tan color, which SeaStar sent with the new unit. Last time they sent the red fluid. My suggestion, contact SeaStar, be prepared to take a few pictures and use different fluid. |
