I tried removing the lower unit from my '87 Evinrude recently to have the skeg repaired. I was able to drop it about 2 inches but it will not drop any further. I think I have properly disconnected the gear shift lever and the last time I removed the lower unit was about 5 years ago. Anything else I can look at other than taking it to a mechanic?

Could it possibly be the water pickup tube that feeds the speedometer holding you up?
