You don't need the universal sonar for what your going to do, however, for an extra $100 it might be worth it if one of your transducers ever went out while on the water. I look at it as it's there if you need it type deal.

If your planning on just using the transom transducer for both units, you'll need to have what's called the ethernet cable. This is the yellow cable that will run unit to unit and allow you to pick which transducer you want to be read, which in your case, it will only have one option if you only have the transom transducer hooked up. As for being able to read the Downscan on your bow unit, I'm not entirely sure if you can do that since this Downscan is so new, good question though. I will find out for you from one of the Lowrance Techs.

Also, I'm not sure if Lowrance is including the t-connectors with the new HDS units or not. I think you'll have to order the t-connectors and cables separately. Any other questions, ask away.
