I would guess that it will be a simple fix. My old motor did this once. The muffs seemed to clear it up. I doubt that the thermostat will be the issue. Use the muffs - that may work. Force water, not too hard backwards through the pee-hole, (outlet). If water flows out with the muffs then there is no clog anymore. If it won't pump water when running in water then you may want to replace the impeller in the pump housing. That is a very easy job. I am not handy and my friend and I have done it on 2 motors. The impeller and new gasket for the pump is very cheap. I bought good repair manuals for my motors and they walk you right through it, with pics.
If a new impeller doesn't solve it then the thermostat may be your next step.
Hope this helps - don't just rush it to a shop. I got a quote on an impeller replacement and it was 150 bucks. I did it in about an hour for about 20 bucks! Find someone handy with tools to help you and pass him beers:)
