Water pumps don't "die" unless you burn them up and they completely seize and fail. They're rubber impellers in a housing, and that's it. They show signs of going bad when your water pressure on plane starts to decrease. Getting sand in them and scoring the housing can ruin them, but they'll still put out some water. If you stirred up all the crap, I'm guessing you got some algae on a poppit valve or lodged somewhere in your water jacket.
