a couple things to make sure to check as you do this:

1) the Marinco plug has 3 wire holes: 1 for neg, 1 for 12v, and 1 for 24v. as Steve said, use 24v (red) and Neg (black).
2) make sure that the wire connections in the plug are tightly screwed down onto the leads. if they aren't tightly in place you'll overheat the 24v jumper inside the plug - that's likely what caused the melting on your first plug.

the Marinco jumper plug really simplifies trolling motor and battery installation. having the system pre-rigged in the Tuffy for 12v, 24v, or 36v means all you have to do is connect your batteries and go. great stuff.
