Oh yeah, it's true that rsidual soap attracts dirt. It has gummy tendancies that will cause dirt to stick to it worse than if you had left things alone to begin with.

Two things I'd add on washing your boat at the car wash:
1) Make sure that you rinse it THOROUGHLY. The car wash soap is very concentrated, and will leave risidual soap in your carpet which feels grungy or filmy from that day on until you get it out. And will get dirty again faster.
2) You're going to have a lot of water in your hull afterwards that probably won't come out with the bildge pump alone if the boat is still on the trailor. I ususally end up jacking the front of the boat up high enough to make it all drain to the back so that it can then either be drained or pumped out.
