The T8 has a much lower gear ratio as compared to the regular 8hp motor. Both run off the same engine design, but the T8 runs, I believe, somewhere around a 2.92:1 gear ratio as compared to something like 2:1 for the regular 8hp. The prop is much bigger both in diameter and lower in pitch which is why it performs so much better in pushing big heavy boats. The T8 will troll slower, and in backtrolling, have more power.

If you are only looking for safety purposes, I'd suggest save the extra $$ and get the regular 8hp. you can use it for other purposes (smaller boat, trolling etc.) as well.
