Matt, unless the power is somehow flaky, the unit itself decides what mode to be in so I would say something is wrong with the unit and not the wiring. The brains are in the unit.

I am not sure what direction you wish to go but my money is on the lowrance x-85 if you can still get one and the x-91 which looks to be the same unit more or less with a new styled look. I have an eagle ultra classic which is similar in most respects except power and it's a trouble free rock solid unit. Hope this helps.
