Most pitot operated speedometers are notoriously optimistic, reading much faster than the actual speed. It's a rarity to find one that is accurate, two of my three boats that have had speedos were off by quite a bit. The new Cobra is the first boat I've owned that's had a speedo that actually gets close to the real speed.

If you own, or have a friend that has a hand held GPS, that's going to give you your most accurate readings.

As far as your boat's speedo, make doubly sure that you don't have the line pinched and that the pitot hole is cleared out. It's really easy to get a pebble or piece of wood (as in bumping a stump) lodged in the hole.
