Fishing the stretch of the river up here by me, my friend and I have never screwed up a skeg or the prop and we've hit a ton of rocks...the old johnson 9.9 finally pooped out though. Lil trick for fishin the river is to break the pin thats holds your motor down, so when you do hit a rock it hits it with a lot less pressure. Never lost any skegs or lower units personally, but on Eagle one year I remember my dad ripping the skeg off in the morning, then in the evening while returning to the lodge for dinner we smoked a marked rock along east long island..waves were so big he didn't see the jug. And there went the lower unit.
