I certainly don't think it is overkill. I have a GPS at the helm and a gps/sonar combo at the bow. Being that I am fishing more reefs that are hard to find with just a sonar, I upgraded. since I have a console rig, I cannot turn the head around to face the bow, plus it would require turing around constantly to see where the boat is located.

I feel it gives me an edge to stay off (or on) structure as compared to not having it.
