It's real common out here to chip diesels since the air is thinner (altitude). I read once that a diesel needs to consume something like 18,000 gallons of air for each gallon of fuel. Getting more efficient intakes and exhaust are probably the appropriate routes, but the chips are easier, so that's the way most people go. There's precious few times one actually needs more power than a stock diesel, but better fuel economy is a reasonable quest.
