I don't know if externals are better, just more common? I would want the puck to have as unobstructed a view as possible, even avoiding windshield/windscreens. I have also heard unconfirmed rumors that units with internal receivers need to be kept verticle in order to maximize reception, so you wouldn't want one on the bow where you'd need it tilted for visibility.
