Location: Minocqua, WI | Hi,
I'm relatively new to the world of bow-mount trolling motors, and operating them. I will be purchasing a motor sometime within the next 2 months and I have narrowed my options down to a PowerDrive V2 with 55lb thrust/ 54" shaft/ 12V battery. This is the model that comes with universal sonar only. For about $600, I feel this would be my best-buy compared to others like a Terrova, Maxxum, Edge, etc.
The boat I'd be using this motor with is a relatively light craft - 15ft Lund Tri-hull with 28HP Evinrude. About half of the boat is fiberglass while the other half is aluminum. The boat is still in-progress with my refurbishing and customizing, but I am slowly nearing the end of everything and this motor and building the mounting platform will be the last part to the project.
I already have the locator unit all-set and ready to go with the motor as it is a Garmin FishFinder 240. Plug it in = catch a fish.
Would a 55lb thrust be good enough for a boat of this size and weight?
The only thing I'm worried about is getting enough battery life to last a full day out of a single 12V unit (I will have a spare battery in back of boat for the transom-mount motor - so I can use that if battery-1 dies)...... However, I'm not willing to spend an extra $150-200 on a 24V unit that comes with 70lb thrust - nor would I have much storage space to begin with for two batteries on the front end of boat.
Does anyone have any experience running and operating a PowerDrive V2? If you do, what do you think of it? Do you also have any suggestions for me and my boat? What would you say?
thanks.
andrew
