I had similar problems with mine sticking on and off. It just seemed to get worse over time, so it took it to Minnkota in Mankato. They called me back and said it was just dirty. They said you should take off the bottom cover and clean it and the problems should go away. I have already winterized my boat so will not be able to try it until next season.
