I have a Maxxum 80 without universal sonar and couldn't be happier. Have had no problems with the brushes, and it's been recommended to me, as you have heard, not to use the universal sonar anyway. Easy to attach your own transducer with a variety of methods.

Considering how many Maxxum users are out there, there don't seem to be too many issues. The Maxxum kind of seems like the standard now.

I wouldn't consider it a gamble to go with the 70, and I always have a backup with me if I go on long trips because you never know. I think you'll enjoy the Maxxum.
