i had the same issue at first when i installed mine.
make sure that your gps module and display are both connected to the included NMEA network connector - you must use the network setup in order for the unit to get the data from the module, even if you're using it as a stand-alone unit that's not connected to a larger network.
also make sure that the gps module has it's own 12v power supply (separate line than the display unit power supply).
