Location: Green Bay, WI | Can you even buy a new Lowrance GPS unit without an antenna?
The Tyee I just bought had a Lowrance 332C at the helm and I replaced it with an LCX-38. While the two systems are not yet networked, I did ask the dealer whether or not you could just put the 38 on the dash and hook in to the 332's antenna. They told me that the 38 basically comes with the antenna--so why not use it? So I have two GPS antennas on the boat. Not bad to have a spare, I guess...
What I need to do now is get an extension cable and an extra RAM base, so I can mount the 332 on the helm for a backup GPS while trolling. I suppose I could just install a network and connect "everything-to-everything-else" but that may be more trouble than it's worth. If all I need is a power/GPS cable, then maybe a 10-foot extension run strategically under the gunwale from the bow to the helm is the way to go. And I know you *cannot* network sonar information, as the bandwidth is too great for the communication protocol Lowrance uses. So I would have to install my extra transducer (from the 38, as it is using the 332's unit while the 332 is using the Universal Sonar transducer on the Terrova) on the transom.
The NMEA network is very cool though--especially the capability to install temperature sensors in livewells and display engine instrumentation on the sonar display.
