If the spindle is grooved, I'd seriously consider getting a new axle or at a minimum, get a shop to cut off the old spindle and re-weld a new one on. That groove will likely be a source of continuing problems. I replaced my whole axle, bearings and hubs for under $140 this spring. Not sure what size your axle is, but new ones don't break the bank like I was afraid it would!
