Dave Jackley trolls with his 75 Merc 2 stroke. I'll tell him to put up a post. JoMusky trolls with his 200EFI, and he says he has no issues. Not sure if either rungs ring free or the Merc fuel additive. Perhaps you just got some carbon goofing things up.

I would go with the kicker, if at all possible. Try to find a ProKicker if you can. These things are awesome. Quiet, smooth, and great throttle control, but I'd look to add a Trollmaster anyway. If you go with a straight 4 stroke, try to find a Bracket Pro. Not made any more, I understand, but it will keep the abuse down by supporting the kicker when running the big motor at speed. And 8 HP may be enough for you, so that may save you some deneros.
